Sanrio Squad

The Sanrio × Squishmallows Collection contains Squishmallow versions of characters from the Sanrio franchise.

Initial Release[]

The collection initially launched in 2020 with eight unique designs depicting Sanrio characters as various food items. There were four featured characters, with each character receiving two unique variants. At the time of release, all members of this squad were available in sizes 8" and 12". In early 2021, half of the squad (one design per character) received new 5" versions from Claire's.[1] In early 2022, the entire squad excluding Pompompurin (Hot Fudge Sundae) was released in size 20" at Costco.[2]

Hello Kitty Squad[]

A follow-up series was released in early 2021 featuring five new Hello Kitty plushies.[3] This series is available in sizes 12" and 20", with the latter size only sold at Costco.

Classic Squad[]

The Classic Squad released in early-mid 2021 and features Sanrio characters styled in their classic looks without any additional gimmicks.[4][5] It includes My Melody, Tuxedo Sam, Keroppi, Badtz-Maru, Chococat, and five variations of Hello Kitty. Most* of this squad was released in size 6.5"/7" at Five Below, as well as sizes 8" and 12" at other retailers. Hello Kitty (Red) and Keroppi are also available in size 20" at Costco.[2]

In early 2024, a classic look for Pompompurin and Cinnamoroll was released with Pompompurin in 8" and 10" and Cinnamoroll in 14". A clip version of Hello Kitty, My Melody, and Cinnamoroll was also released in early February 2024.

Costco Exclusives[]

In February 2022, Costco released three new exclusive Sanrio Squishmallows featuring Hello Kitty dressed as different animals from savanna/grassland regions.[6] This squad is only available in size 20".

Dessert Squad[]

First spotted in Meijer stores around early April 2022, this squad initially launched with only Hello Kitty, My Melody, Tuxedo Sam, and Cinnamoroll, all available in both sizes 8" and 12".[7] Pompompurin was released for the first time later that summer exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart, where it was only available in size 8".[8] Soon after, the entire squad received new 5" versions from Claire's (including Keroppi, who had not been released at all up to that point and is still not available in any other size).[9] The designs of the Squishmallows in this squad are all themed after desserts.

Hot Topic Exclusives[]

Hot Topic released two exclusive Sanrio Squishmallows in May 2022, featuring the characters Hello Kitty (with Boba) and Kuromi.[10] An additional Hot Topic exclusive Hello Kitty (with Strawberry) was later released in Spring 2023, followed by new Cinnamoroll and My Melody Squishmallows in Summer 2023. These Squishmallows are only available in size 8", excluding Kuromi who has a clip variant.

Food Truck Squad[]

A new Hello Kitty Squishmallow was released at Walgreens around late May 2022, with its tag confirming that new versions of My Melody, Cinnamoroll, Keroppi, and Pompompurin were also on their way.[11] However, the rest of the squad would not release for another five months, with the remaining characters first appearing at Meijer stores in mid-late October 2022. Each character in this squad is dressed in a striped uniform and holding a snack/food item. All Squishmallows in this squad were originally only available in size 10", before being released in size 8" at ToyDrops in January 2023.

Beach Squad[]

Around the end of May 2022, preorders for a new Pompompurin and a new Kuromi Squishmallow appeared on the GameStop (US) website.[12][13] A new mermaid Hello Kitty was spotted in stores soon after, with its tag confirming that the three were all part of the same squad alongside another Hello Kitty Squishmallow in red sunglasses.[14] The Squishmallows in this squad seem to all be dressed for or themed around the beach.

Every member of this squad was made available in size 6.5" at Five Below and size 8" at GameStop. Additionally, Hello Kitty (Mermaid) was released in size 11" at Walgreens, and Hello Kitty (Red Sunglasses) was released in size 14" on Amazon.

Aggretsuko[]

Two new 8" Squishmallows of the character Aggretsuko were released at GameStop (US) around the end of June 2022.[15][16] These Squishmallows were also later made available at Five Below in size 6.5". Both designs depict her in her classic look, with the main difference between the two being her expression.

Gudetama[]

Two new Squishmallows of the character Gudetama were spotted at Five Below around mid-July 2022.[17] They officially released later that same month, on July 31, 2022. As of now, they are still exclusive to Five Below and only available in size 6.5".

Three new Gudetama variants were released in early 2024 in 8".

Sailor Squad[]

This squad was first spotted at Five Below around mid-July 2022, officially releasing later that same month on July 31, 2022.[17] This squad features Cinnamoroll, Tuxedo Sam, and two new variations of Hello Kitty. Most of the Squishmallows in this squad are themed around sailors. As of now, they are still exclusive to Five Below and only available in size 6.5".

Halloween Squad[]

A new 8" Halloween-themed Hello Kitty Squishmallow was released at Walgreens in August 2022. In late summer of 2023, Halloween versions of Kuromi and Cinnamoroll were released with an additional size of 10". Franken Kitty was also rereleased in both 8" and 10" and is no longer a Walgreens Exclusive.

Kaiju Squad[]

Three new 8" Sanrio Squishmallows were released at Toy Drops in late December 2022, featuring the characters Hello Kitty, My Melody, and Tuxedo Sam wearing cutsie Kaiju costumes.

Easter Squad[]

Four new 8" Sanrio Squishmallows were released in early 2023 in anticipation for the Easter season. This squad features the characters Hello Kitty, My Melody, and Cinnamoroll dressed in pastel gingham-patterned outfits.

For Easter 2024, a new wave for this squad featuring Hello Kitty, My Melody, Kuromi, and Pompompurin wears bunny suits in 8".

Pool Squad[]

Two new 8" Sanrio Squishmallows began appearing in March 2023, featuring the characters Hello Kitty, My Melody, Cinnamoroll, and Keroppi dressed for the pool.

Tokyo Speed Racer Squad[]

New Squishmallows of Hello Kitty, My Melody, Tuxedo Sam, Keroppi, Pompompurin, and Kuromi dressed as racers were released in Spring 2023, they are available in 8".

There is also a variant made for My Melody planned and was available on some websites. However, the listing was later removed and was never formally released in stores. Whether this Squishmallow will be made available later on is unknown.

Plaid/Argyle Pattern Squad[]

Six 8" and 6.5" new Sanrio Squishmallows released in late spring of 2023. They were designed with plaid or argyle patterns on their clothes or hoods.

Badtz-Maru Squad[]

A variant of Badtz-Maru wearing a light purple hoodie was released in 8" in mid-2023 and was first spotted at Hot Topic stores. Later in the year, a new variant of Badtz-Maru holding popcorn was released in 5",

Love Squad[]

4 heart themed Squishmallows were released in 8" in mid 2023. Despite being heart themed, they were released long after Valentnes.

Christmas Squad[]

Christmas-themed Sanrio Squishmallows were made available for order online around September 20, 2023. Featuring Hello Kitty, My Melody, and Cinnamoroll wearing Christmas-themed costumes in 8". They were later available in physical stores in October of 2023 and were then available in 10"

50th Anniversary Hello Kitty[]

A new Hello Kitty Squishmallow was released on Squishmallows.com in 12" on November 1, 2023 as a celebration of Hello Kitty's 50th anniversary. Despite being exclusive to Squishmallows.com, it is not labeled as a Select Series Squishmallow.

Valentine Squad[]

A new set of Valentine-themed Sanrio Squishmallows with a chocolate-dipped motif were initially teased in early December 2023 and were made available in online retailer stores by December 8. They were released to physical stores in January 2024 featuring Hello Kitty, My Melody and Cinnamoroll in 8". [18]

Sakura Squad[]

A new Sakura-themed Hello Kitty in 14" was released on December 21, 2023 on Squishmallows' official Amazon store. In January of 2024, a new variant of My Melody and Hello Kitty was then available in stores in 8" and 14". A new wave of this squad is expected to release in March featuring Cinnamoroll, My Melody, and Hello Kitty in 6.5".

Squooshems[]

In late February 2024, a new line of Squooshems was released with Sanrio characters. The Sanrio collection seems to be separate from the regular Squooshems series as the first Sanrio line is listed as series 1. The line features plain versions of Hello Kitty, Kuromi, My Melody, Cinnamoroll, Pompompurin, and Badtz-Maru as squishy toys. Images coming soon.
